Natural opium alkaloids, such as Morphine and Codeine.
Semi-synthetic opioids such as Heroin and Oxycodone.
Fully synthetic opioids such as Pethidine (Meperidine) and Methadone.
OPIOIDS AND THEIR COMMERCIAL OR STREET NAMES:
Agonist treatment (e.g., methadone pharmacotherapy)
Antagonist treatment (e.g., naltrexone)
The use of other agents (e.g., clonidine) to help withdrawal from opioid
drugs as a means of entry into treatment.
Studies over the past 20 years have repeatedly shown opioids to be safe
when they are used correctly. Opioid effects can be reversed with an opioid
antagonist such as naloxone or naltrexone. These competitive
antagonists bind to the opioid receptors with higher affinity than agonists
but do not activate the receptors, A proper use of Opioids make them potent
therapeutic analgesics, so on this basis we can say that the right use of
opioid not cause severe toxicity but misuse results as DEATH.

A Narcotic analgesic drug (Opioid) is a psychoactive chemical that works
by binding to opioid receptors, which are found principally in
the central and peripheral nervous system and the gastrointestinal tract. The
receptors in these organ systems mediate both the beneficial effects and
the side effect of opioids. Opoids are mainly used as a potent analgesic as
they act directly on the central nervous system of the brain, resulting in
feelings of euphoria. These feelings and the physical and psychoactive
affects of the drugs can help explain the non-medical use (misuse) and
abuse of prescription opiates, a serious and rapidly growing health care

EVIDENSES ABOUT OPIATE ABUSE IN INDIA :
There is no data available on how many numbers are using such drugs.
The government of India, however, clarified that no drugs abuse survey
has been done in the last nine years.
“The last drug abuse survey was done in 2001 and after that no national
survey has been conducted. Now the pilot survey is on, which will be
followed by national survey. So the exact number of people using
pharmaceuticals would only be known after that,”
@Ish Kumar, deputy director general of the Narcotics control bureau.
The report also mentioned that there is growing number of people who
have been misusing the prescription drugs, such as synthetic opioids.
