Saint Lucians have watched and listened in awe over the past three (3) weeks to outlandish
and ominous statements/actions espoused by persons who hold the highest offices in our land.
These developments appear to challenge the guarantee on basic rights accorded to every Saint
Lucian under the constitution. Under the heading: Protection of Fundamental Rights and
Freedom; Chapter 1 (b) of the Constitution of Saint Lucia states: of conscience, of
We have all witnessed the reckless and shameful behavior by Ministers Alva Baptiste and
Harold Dalson who have now been joined by Prime Minister Kenny Anthony. Saint Lucians
have every reason to be concerned over these manifestations which appear to threaten the
democratic traditions of our country and our basic rights guaranteed under the constitution.
