LESSON 2:NAMING/FORMULA FORCOVALENT COMPOUNDSCovalent Bonding Unit
TARGETS I can name binary molecular compounds given the formula. I can determine the formula of a binary molecular compound given the name.
GREEK PREFIXES Binary molecular compounds are named using Greek prefixes.1 Mono 6 Hexa2 Di 7 Hepta3 Tri 8 Octa4 Tetra 9 Nona5 Penta 10 Deca
BINARY MOLECULAR COMPOUNDSNAMING RULES1. The first element in the formula is named first, and the full element name is used.2. The second element is named by dropping the ending and adding –ide.3. Prefixes are used to denote the number of atoms present.4. The prefix mono- is never used for naming the first element. For example, CO is called carbon monoxide, not monocarbon monoxide.5. If the element name begins with a vowel, the vowel is typically dropped from the prefix name. For example CO4 would be called carbon tetroxide, not carbon tetraoxide.
PRACTICE Name the following compounds1. CO22. CCl43. SO34. N6O95. S5Br10
PRACTICE Name the following compounds1. CO2 - carbon dioxide2. CCl4 - carbon tetrachloride3. SO3 - sulfur trioxide4. N6O9 - hexanitrogen nonoxide5. S5Br10 - pentasulfur decabromide
BINARY MOLECULAR COMPOUNDSFORMULA WRITING1. The prefix is translated and written as a subscript to the right of the element symbol.2. The elements are written in the formula in the order they appear in the name. For example, carbon tetroxide would be written as CO4.
PRACTICE Write the correct formula for the following compounds:1. Dinitrogen pentoxide2. Iodine trichloride3. Sulfur hexafluoride4. Xenon tetrafluoride5. Heptaphosphorus decoxide
PRACTICE Write the correct formula for the following compounds:1. Dinitrogen pentoxide – N2O52. Iodine trichloride – ICl33. Sulfur hexafluoride – SF64. Xenon tetrafluoride – XeF45. Heptaphosphorus decoxide – P7O10
