  • 1. how to avoid negative effects Most people follow what their dentist recommends and brush several times a day. You should really not floss more than one time on any given day, but it is something you should do. Not everybody uses mouthwash, but there are many kinds for all different applications. You scrape your tongue to keep the bacteria from building up and causing bad breath and other problems. After all of that, it may be possible that your teeth are not as white as they can be or you want them to be. You could be fighting your own efforts through unintentional mistakes; so let's take a closer look. You already know that smoking is terrible for you. You know that it leads to all sorts of cancers of the lungs and other internal organs. Researchers have also discovered that drastic skin alterations can occur as a result of smoking for extended periods. If you smoke, then we do not have to remind you of how much a pack of smokes cost. Forever it has been known that teeth become stained from smoking and the possibility of mouth cancer increases. Smoking basically undoes all of the other work that you have put in to creating a good smile. This is obviously a bad habit, and we encourage you to make the effort to break the habit. Perhaps you or someone you know has a problem with inadvertent teeth grinding, and it is a known medical condition among many people. What has been discovered about those who do grind their teeth is they are under a great deal of stress and it is usually stress that is present over time. It is easy to see the damage that can result from this condition to the teeth, but that is something that is not always considered. There are so many people who have sensitive teeth plus other chronic issues, and teeth grinding will lead to that once the enamel has become too thin. However, this condition is well known, and there are measures you can take to help protect your teeth while you address the stress. Hopefully your doctor told you about ensuring sound hygiene with teeth and gums if you have diabetes. Most people know that diabetes wreaks havoc on the body, and can be terrible for the feet. Periodontal disease affects the gums and this can be caused by diabetes, too. There are many things to be on the lookout for with diabetes and periodontal disease, and talk to your dentist or doctor about this. You should take proper care of your teeth and gums, anyway, but it's good to know these other points. Don't slack off on your brushing, flossing or fluoride treatments. So no matter how hard you try to take good care of your teeth and gums, you could be engaged in something else that is silently undoing your efforts. Those are what we call unintentional mistakes, but if you keep doing them after you are aware of them, then that is another story.
