Classic Wedding Tale With a Chick-Lit TwistAfter planning my own wedding I had a very clear sense of why I needed to write this book. There is so much friction that goes on during this process and at the end I realized it was all anecessary rite of passage. The arguments aren’t really over the invitations or the flowerarrangements but about your role as a part of a new, emerging family. I wanted to write aboutthat journey. We like to hide the friction and focus on the window dressing, but it’s really thatfriction that makes weddings such a life-changing, crazy experience. The book is definitely a love letter to Phoenix, the hot spots, the activities—these girls do a lotof shopping. It’s an outdoor culture, despite the heat, and the climate is always a huge topic ofconversation. I spent some time in the southwest and wanted to capture the resort-like culturethat permeates the area. These girls are in the 20s, very focused on their careers. Phoenix isbursting with opportunity and these girls are making their mark and defining who they are atwork. It’s a time in my life I remembered well and wanted to retell.Thank you!Penny Kim
5 Questions for Penny Kim1. What is Desert Wedding about?Desert Wedding is a riff on the classic chick-lit wedding story. It takes on the oftentimes bizarrerite of passage that comes with getting engaged and married, told through the lens of two bestfriends—Elsie and Res—living in Phoenix, Arizona.2. Can you tell us a little about your main and supporting characters?Res works a retail job and has been engaged for about a year to her finance, David. She starts offvery passive and accommodating but the process of planning her wedding brings out herstubborn side. Her partner in crime and best friend is Elsie, a rising star in Arizona government.Elsie is rough around the edges with a biting wit, and it’s difficult for her to maintain objectivitywhen it comes to some to the vapid rituals associated with weddings. Elsie’s boyfriend Jonah isalmost the female version of Res, very quiet, patient, and accommodating. But Elsie’s strongpersonality may be too much for him, and the book takes you through a critical point in theirrelationship.
5 Questions for Penny Kim, Cont.3. Do you tend to base your characters on real people or are they totallyfrom your imagination?I think they are exaggerated fragments of personalities close to me. Res, for example, is basedoff someone who is very familiar to me. Elsie is my shrew, a compilation of women I’ve run intoover the years who just have a take-no-prisoner attitude. It was a challenge at times to make herlikable, but I think her relationship with the sweet, accommodating Res is an important one. Itteaches her to catch flies with honey and soften up some of her aggression.4. Open the book to page 69. What is happening?Res has just tried on what she thinks is her wedding dress. It’s nothing like the monstrosities shewas first inclined towards—it’s very elegant, very Res. Elsie is over the moon, primarily becauseshe got to dictate what dress her friend wore. You’ll have to read the book to see if Res actuallyends up wearing it down the aisle.5. Are you planning a sequel?Yes, I have an idea of what challenges these girls might be facing in the years to come. There isno such thing as a happy ending!
