• 5. INTRODUCTION A ROADWAY CONDITION SURVEY IS DONE BY VISUAL INSPECTION OF A ROADWAY. A ROADWAY CONDITION SURVEY IS THE PROCESS OF COLLECTING DATA TO DETERMINE THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY, DISTRESSES, SKID RESISTANCE, AND OVERALL RIDING QUALITY OF THE PAVEMENT.
• 6. OBJECTIVE OF STUDY  To draw detailed layout of roadway and intersection.  For qualitative observation of potholes, elevated or depressed manholes, speed breakers etc.  To determine loss of effective width at different locations due to loading or unloading, illegal parking, construction utility etc.
• 7. SCOPE OF THE STUDY  DESIGN AND PLANNING PURPOSE  IMPROVEMENT PURPOSE  DYNAMIC TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT AND PRIORITY SCHEDULE  ACCIDENT RATE COMPUTATION
• 8. METHODOLOGY OF ROADWAY CONDITION SURVEY  MANUAL METHOD  WALKING SURVEY  WINDSHIELD SURVEY  WALKING AND WINDSHIELD SURVEY  AUTOMATIC METHOD  VIDEO CAMERA  DISTANCE MEASURING INSTRUMENT  GIS METHOD  AUTOMATED ROAD ANALYZER
• 9. MANUAL METHOD  WALKING SURVEY • Done by walking down by the side of the pavement by a group of people. • Provides the most correct data. • Time consuming. ABDULLAH RECORDING DATA
• 10. WINDSHIELD SURVEY • Systematic observation is made from a moving vehicle. • Useful when particular section of road segment is observed. • Time saving. Survey process by Windshield method
• 11. WALKING AND WINDSHIELD SURVEY • Better method than the single application. • Achieve maximum pavement data and complete pavement surveys. • Require both technological and human activity. Picture of walking and wind shield survey
• 12. AUTOMATIC METHOD VIDEO CAMERA • Observe service condition. • Generally attached on the post in the street. • Doesn’t work at night. Roadway condition survey using street camera
• 13. AUTOMATED ROAD ANALYZER • Technically complex vehicle. • Attached with sensor machine. • Take photo as well as distance. Road way condition survey by vehicle
• 14. DATA COLLECTION • Observation – Roadway Condition Survey • Method – Manual • Equipment – Camera, Tape etc. • Location – Panthapath to Russell Square • Date - 14.12.2014 • Day - Sunday • Time – 11.00 am -4:00 pm • Weather condition – Sunny, Gentle Breeze • Duration – 5 hrs. • 20. Dimension and Location of pedestrian refuge Besides intersection and near opening of the road, to facilitate the pedestrian crossing, pedestrian refuge was provided. 6 inch height provided in pedestrian refuge.
• 21.  Surface condition Surface condition near high speed location Zebra crossing
• 22. At intersections • Qualitative observation of Potholes , elevated / depressed manholes , speed breakers etc. was counted and recorded .
• 23. Operating Condition Observation  Location and Width of side roads Along the direction Panthapath to Russell Square Side road No. Chain age starting from Russell square (m) Width (m) 1 49.6 3.6 2 80 4.1 3 229.6 3 4 299.5 6 5 350 1.9 6 592.3 3 7 783 4.5 8 892.2 2

• 25.  Road side land-use pattern The roadside land use pattern is highly dense with commercially developed area including Bank, Hospital , School, Market, Shopping Mall, Showrooms etc. in the range of 2 storied up to 24 storied.
• 26.  Loss of road width  Due to Parking & Parking Barrier
• 28. • Presence of Dustbin/ Trash Disposal & Construction Materials
• 29. • Cutting , Digging ,Repair & Maintains work & Some Illegal Activities
• 30.  Pedestrians Crossing Facilities  Opening Median Due to facilitate the pedestrian crossing, opening was provided on top of the median at some intervals in the mid block section. Near panthapath signal median height was found to be approximately 20 inch. For facilate as a pedestrian refuge ,this height was reduced to 4-5 inch.
• 31. • Pedestrian Refuge Besides near intersection and opening of the road, to facilitate the pedestrian crossing, pedestrian refuge was provided.
• 32.  Location & Types of Traffic Control Device  Road Sign & Marking  Sign :Traffic signs or road signs are signs erected at the side or above roads to give instructions or provide information to road users. In our survey road we found sings in both intersection.
• 33.  Marking Types of marking Centre Line, Pavement Edge Lines, Stop Line, Pedestrian Crossings, Word Marking/Message, Divisional Arrow
• 34. • Signal Traffic signs control the flow of traffic, warn you of hazards ahead, guide you to your destination, and inform you of roadway services.  Primary traffic signal
