Vinz, Sayid & Hubert go up on to the roof of a Banlieue.Vinz & Hubert purchase a hotdog but Sayid cannot afford it so he steals one. During the confrontation that follows we find out that Sayid has an older brother who he respects and looks up to.Later in the scene the police attempt to force the locals from the roof after they heckle the mayor. The locals refuse but Sayid’s brother sends away from the potentially explosive situation. How can Todorov’s theory of narrative be applied to this scene? What can we learn about how the police (state) and the ‘underclass’ see one another? What is the significance of his older brother’s attitude and treatment of Sayid in this sequence? Consider: The bitter and aggressive attitude of the locals The arrogant and assuming attitude of the Police force.
