Transcripts - Presenting evaluation
Title of the filmWe chose “DEACTIVE” as our title for our horrorfilm as it is very short and snappy, and also itcreates an enigma in the head of the audience asthey start to think about what has been“deactivated” and what has caused it and thiswould drive the audience to go and watch the film.Another reason we chose this title for our horrorfilm trailor is because it is genre specif, as our film isbased on a social networking site called Facebookand the website itself has a function on it called“deactive” so the millions of users of this socialnetworking site will find themselves to beconnected with this title as they’re a part of theFacebook using “group” of people, and this sense ofconnection might lead the audience in wanting towatch the film.
Setting/LocationWe chose very stereotypical settings and location for our trailer, e.g. the house in the firstimage, the living room in the second image and the bedroom in the last image.Image 1: the shot of the house is a very similar way of an establishing shot of a horror film, thisis so that the audience has a clear idea of where the story within the film is taking place and sothey can get an idea of the surrounding location. This establishing shot is also very effective as itseems to be from the point of view of the villain, a stalker who is creeping up on their victim. This is very effective as it puts the audience in the shoes of the villain and this makes themwonder about how the villain would get into the house and how they would kill the character.Image 2: the dining room is a setting I’ve seen in many horror films and it plays a vital role inbuilding up the suspense and tension in a horror film. We decided to use this shot as it showsthe possible entrance that could b used by the villain (the back door) and also has the diningtable which is a very common place for the victims to hide as I’ve seen in many horror films.Image 3: shows the main character in her bedroom and this gives the audience a feel that shehas isolated herself from the outside world and suggests that she could be psychologicallyderranged.
Costumes & PropsWe’ve used a year book as the main prop for our story and the story unfolds when the maincharacter finds the old year book and as she looks through it, she finds several hate messageswritten in them from her childhood bullies. So, she then decides to search them up on facebookand delete them from her friends list, and this leads to unexpected deaths of the bullies and allthis happens because she finds the main prop (the year book)The knife is a very common and stereotypical weapon in a horror film and that’s the reason wedecided to use it, and also because of the phallic symbol attached to the weapon as thissuggests that the villain is psychologically deranged. The bed in the corner of the main character’s bedroom suggests an attempt of isolation fromthe world and also is a place where she finds herself to be safe and away from the childhoodbullies.
Camera work & editingThe image is a worms eye view of the bookshelf where the main character accidently knocksdown the year book from, this shot is very effective in creating suspense and engagementbecause as the book falls down and hits the camera the audience should be shocked/scared as itseems like the book is falling towards them and is about to hit them and this will further createenigma as the audience try to figure out the importance of the book that has just coincidentlyfallen as the main character is looking for something. The over the shoulder seen in image 2 is very effective in showing what the character isreading/doing from their point of view as well as being able to see the character’s bodylanguage and reactions. The wide and slightly high angled shot in image 3 is very effective in showing the surroundinglocation and also to show the entrance of the character as this puts thoughts into the minds ofthe audience as to where the character could hide from the villain to escape death. The last image has a classic point of view shot from the eyes of the villain and this is used toshow who the villain is targeting and who the next victim is going to be. The way the villain islooking through the railings suggests to the audience that the villain is entering the character’sroom so there may be no where for the vulnerable character to escape from.
Title font & style The style of our title is very straight forward, calm and relaxed which goes against the usual horrific and splattered by blood titles used in most horror films, and we did this to create more suspense in the minds of the audience because they will see the title and see that it isn’t the usual horror movie filled with expected plots and scenes but instead they will wonder how this can be a new type of horror movie so this creates enigma and drives the audience to go and actually watch the flim.
Story & how the opening sets it upThe opening shot is of the main character’s finger as sheruns it across a bookshelf, and as she is looking for a book toread, she accidently pushes the books and coincidently herold year book from her primary school falls out and as sheflicks through it and finds hate messages the trailer goes intoa flashback of her childhood bullies. This sets up the storybecause after that the audience will be able to guess thatthe plot of the film is going to be that she gets revenge onher childhood bullies by killing them, but there is stillsuspense over how she is going to kill them.
Genre & how the opening sets it upThe opening is very effective in suggesting what kind of horror film it is, as the yearbook in image 1 suggests that her childhood is going to be a part of the story and thatshe might have been bullied so she now seeks revenge.Image 2 is ideal from a psychological horror as it is a mid shot of the main characterwhich shows her facial expression and it looks like she’s giving an evil look, like she’splanned something evil in her head. Also the lock of hair over her eyes create a senseof her hiding her identity which makes her presence on screen much more creepy.Image 3 is very straight forward as it shows the main character highlighting the hatecomments from her childhood bullies and this straight away suggests to the audiencethat she is going to track them down and get revenge.
How characters are introducedImage 1 shows the introduction shot of the main character. There is silence and all you can hearis her humming a nursery rhyme which straight away suggests to the audience that she ispsychologically deranged, and there is something wrong with her.The second image is also very effective in introducing one of the victims as the wide shot allowsthe audience to see the character as well as the surrounding area, this could lead to theaudience wondering about places within the shot where the character could hide from thevillain to avoid her death. The lat image is a classic point of view shot from the eyes of the villain and this is very effectivein introducing the other victim as we can see that the villain has already reached the victim’sbedroom and is vulnerable because he has no idea that the villain is only a couple of feet awayfrom him and he has no where to escape to.
Special effectsA special effect we used was a vignette as it is the most effective and also the most obvious wayto show that the scene is a flashback. Rather than a lengthy divergence into the past, we choseto place a vignette in the scene as it hints at a larger tale without slowing down the momentumof the main story. The audience can gain a deeper understanding of the reason behind thepsychologically messed up character (granted, not necessarily as rich and deep as a lengthydivergence into the past could provide but more than no information at all), and the main storycan pick up in the following scenes.
