Famous Indian Paintings
Paintings have a very long history and tradition in the Indian
art. Some of which are believed to be from even before 5500
BC and were rock paintings. Currently, there are various types
of painting styles and genres in Indian culture. Here are some of
the types which are hand-crafted and painted by some of the
talented artists, artisan and painters along with brief detail of
each painting style/type.
Mughal painting is a particular style of painting in South Asia or
especially in India which emerges from Persian miniature painting,
with Indian Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist influences.
Mural painting is an artwork painted or applied directly on a wall,
ceiling or other large surfaces. It can be of different styles and are
important as they bring art into the public sphere.
Rajput painting or Rajasthani Painting, is one of the styles of Indian
painting, evolved and flourished in the royal courts of Rajputana,
Indian traditional painting is a collection of Rajasthani paintings,
Mysore paintings, Tanjore paintings, Madhubani paintings, Pattachitra
paintings, Kalamkari paintings and mughal paintings.
Modern painting is painting style and philosophy which includes
artistic works produced during the period extending roughly from the
century to the current era.
Tanjore painting is a classical South Indian painting style. The subjects
of most paintings are Hindu Gods, Goddess and saints.
Mysore painting is also a classical South Indian painting that
originated in and around the town of Mysore in Karnataka, India. With
the theme Hindu Gods, Goddesses and scenes from Hindu mythology.
Kalighat painting is a painting style which was originated in Bengal,
India. The main theme of the painting is to depict Hindu Gods,
Goddess and other mythological characters.
Miniature painting (in India) is a painting style and the main
subjects include portraits, court scenes, flora and fauna.
Madhubani painting also known as Mithila painting is an Indian painting style
practiced in the Mithila region of Bihar, India, and the adjoining parts of Terai
region in Nepal. Painting is done with fingers, twigs, brushes, nib-pens, and
matchsticks, using natural dyes and pigments.
Canvas is a common support medium for oil painting, replacing
wooden panels. Canvas is typically stretched across a wooden frame
called a stretcher, and may be coated with gesso before it is to be used.
Acrylic painting is fast-drying paint containing pigment
suspension in acrylic polymer emulsion. Acrylic paints can be
diluted with water, but become water-resistant when dry.
Oil painting is one of the processes of painting with pigments that are
bound with a medium of dried oil. Paintings include landscapes and
