BohoMamma Receives an Honoree by the 2012 Webbys

Lifestyle Website Category by the 2012 Webby Awards. Other honorees include Martha Stewart,iVillage
and Lucky Magazine, so in addition to being proud of our work; grateful to be recognized; and, honored to
stand next to such large media players in the Website Lifestyle Category, we consider ourselves to be the
little engine that could.
BohoMamma, a webzine for women offering a profoundly beautiful and lyrical spin on empowering women
to be inspirational, fearless and to surround themselves with loveliness decided to create their own
BohoMamma was created by Shannon M. Kulik, the founder of HSquared Editorial and Brand Studios, a
boutique editorial and brand management agency that develops digital content for companies and
The concept for BohoMamma came after the birth of Ms. Kulik’s son in 2007. As a transplanted Southerner
living in New York City, Ms. Kulik quickly realized the days of having a mom or aunts drop in to help care for
a baby was out of the question. So, she turned to the Internet for answers on health, parenting, fashion,
distractions, howto’s and quickly realized there was space on the Internet for a different vision of a site for
women, especially urban mothers.
BohoMamma decided that background noise and too much advertising was the antithesis of a relaxing
experience (so advertising was out); BohoMamma determined that many sites spoke to one aspect of a
woman’s life; either that of her role as mother, business woman, a woman interested in style or home decor,
which essentially sent women to multiple sites every day in search of information that mattered to them and
compartmentalized different aspects of a woman’s life.
The decision was made by BohoMamma to create a lifestyle site for women; a site that represents and
respects the myriad interests and aspects to a woman’s character, including parenting, politics, fashion and
opinion. How many moms have been dismissed in a conversation on politics because “she’s a mother”? Or
how many single women have been excluded from a conversation about marriage because “she’s a single
The choice was made that a key focus of BohoMamma’s mission was to empower women and so the
decision was made that BohoMamma would not produce any story which contained gossip (good or bad)
against other women.
BohoMamma wants to expand the conversation that women have with each other. BohoMamma hopes to
include all women and all opinions in the conversation; so that women recognize their support comes from
the stories, the experiences, ideas and the inspiration that each of us brings to the table.
As a small site, with a Publisher/EditorinChief who makes her living producing digital content, the site
enjoys the use of applications and software that have yet to make their way to other largescale sites.
BohoMamma produces its Newsletters in WebDoc; it has just created its first Digital Magazine; it has
created a site in the ‘pin’ style format in hopes that the content is easy to view and to manage; it includes
sound tracks from Sound Cloud. Essentially, it is utilizing the site to test new applications and new ways to
interact with its users.
When asked what she hopes her readers get from the site, Ms. Kulik said, “Our goal is to serve as the spark
that reminds women that we can and should be the influence, the creative force, the muse and the artistry in
our lives. The biggest compliment for me would be to receive an email from a reader who had decided to
create her own blog; or to write a book; or to create a garden. I want women claim their space in this world
and to find their voice within it.”
