Natural remedies for ADD and ADHD
You're tired after a long day at work and the kids are bouncing off the walls. The eldest is disruptive
in class and her teacher is asking you to talk to a doctor about ADHD. The youngest won't learn to
read because he gets distracted too easily. Would it be such a bad thing, you wonder, to consider
following the school's advice and speaking to your doctor about ADD drugs? You've heard both
success and horror stories about medicating for ADHD. What's a person to do? Thankfully, there are
natural options that can help with ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) and ADHD (Attention Deficit
Hyperactivity Disorder) if you're willing to consider them.
ADD and ADHD remain controversial, despite Ritalin's mainstream presence since the 1980's.
Because there is no definite method of diagnosis for Attention Deficit (Hyperactivity) Disorder, there
are those who contest calling it a disorder at all. Regardless of your beliefs about what "ADD" and
"ADHD" really mean, there are several holistic tools that can be helpful to stressed kids and
First and foremost, take a close look at your kids' diet.
Is it loaded with sugar? How often do you give them chocolate, other corner-store junk food or
supermarket sweets? More than once a week is too much, and is enough to cause candida and
Are your children getting enough vegetables and protein?
Protein deficiency is a big offender in ADHD, but a shortage of certain B vitamins or of antioxidants
(including vitamins C and E) can also affect mental clarity and the ability to focus. A recent study
showed that low iron can shorten attention span and zinc deficiency causes faulty memory in adults.
When kids fall into hyperactive behavior patterns, it's worth finding out what they ate most recently.
ADHD symptoms are often linked to something called a "brain allergy" - a food or other allergen (like
dust or mold) that is psychoactive. These foods can trigger mental and emotional symptoms instead
of a more typical allergic reaction.
The most common brain allergies are to wheat, corn, cane sugar, honey, dairy, eggs, artificial
coloring, artificial flavors, and MSG. You would be amazed at how often detecting and removing the
right one of these "brain poisons" from what a child eats can completely transform their behavior,
energy levels, and life. (Hint: If you're not sure where to start, try removing refined sugar from your
diet or that of your child for just a week.)
Toxins, such as heavy metals which collect in the brain, nervous system, liver and other organs can
also be brain allergies. Did your kid become hyperactive after his first filling, or after a vaccination
was administered at her school? You may need internal cleansing to remove toxins.
Energy work for ADD and ADHD
Physical exercises that realign the body's energies, like those in Energy Medicine and Brain Gym,
can be immensely helpful for helping adults and kids to focus and learn. Specific exercises to help
them to stay calm, to express themselves more coherently, and to channel excess energy into
learning and communicating more clearly and creatively.
ADHD patients often observe that they are more sensitive to energies than most people expect, and
they really get a lot from learning about practices like Energy Medicine, yoga, and meditation
Other options and questions to ask...
Essential oils are one of the most powerful ways to address any kind of mental or emotional
disturbance - find out how to use herbal oils to help with ADD in Essential Oils for ADD and ADHD.
Another question I recommend we ask of anyone suffering from depression or ADD/ADHD is, what in
your life is really making you unhappy? It is simplistic (but in many cases astonishingly effective) to
recognize the unfulfilled emotional or creative needs in an adult or child's life, whether at home or at
work/school. If something is making your child unhappy enough that they are acting out, are you
listening? (Or, adults: is your inner child feeling ignored and desperate?)
Hard as teachers work, the school system is flawed and gifted children, as well as those who
struggle with their academics, often end up labeled with jargon like "ADHD" because their needs are
not being met.

other ADHD drugs, or learn about the new Indigo kids, many of whom are diagnosed with ADD or
Do you or your child have any of these characteristics? You might be indigo, not ADD/ADHD.
