Popularity of Smoking Electronic Cigarettes
Electronic cigarettes can be smoked virtually anywhere. Marketed as a safer alternative to traditional nicotine cigarettes, e-cigs
fast rose to popularity with smokers who want to lessen the toxic effects of smoking to their health, or those who want to quit
gradually from the habit. There is a lot of debate about the regulation of e-cig products as authorities think it necessary to
regulate and treat electronic cigarettes as medical products. The e-cig industry, on the other hand, feels that the authorities
have no substantiated reason to implement such regulation. Despite the controversy about its health risks and benefits,
electronic cigarette usage is continuously on the rise all over the world.
According to a study, e-cigarette sales have increased from a meagre 50,000 in 2008 to around 3.5 million in the year 2012.
Another 2011 study has found that one in five smoking adults in the United States have tried using electronic cigarettes. In the
UK, a study that surveyed 12,000 adults showed that 11% of regular smokers in the sample said they use e-cigarettes, while
24% said that they have tried using them in the past. One percent of the non-smokers in the sample said that they have tried
these electronic cigs but have decided to discontinue using them.
With these facts, it is evident that the e-cigarette industry will only continue to
grow. In fact, a subculture has already emerged around the use of e cigarettes.
This subculture calls itself "vaping community," members of which are firm in
using electronic cigarettes as a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes. These
users and hobbyists use customized devices that don't resemble typical ecigarettes.
Because there are no current laws that prohibit the use of electronic cigarettes in
public places, its use can only be expected to grow with its popularity and the
proliferation of vaping communities. Many researches also reiterate positive
aspects of the product, although they do not discount its risks. Here are some
pros and cons of smoking e-cigarettes according to various studies:
Smoking e-cigarettes alleviated desire to smoke and was better tolerated by the participants (40 tobacco-dependent
smokers) than tobacco
E-cigarettes dramatically decreased consumption of cigarettes and prevented withdrawal symptoms in a study of 50
smokers wanting to reduce health risks of smoking
E-cigarettes lack regulatory factors, essential warnings, clear instructions for use, proper labelling, and safe disposal
E-cigarette-smoking causes acute pulmonary effects according to a study published by CHEST in 2011
