METHODS FOR OBTAINING14polonium is a very rare element in nature because of the short half-life ofall its isotopes. it is found in uranium ores at about 0.1 mg per metric ton(1 part in 1010),which is approximately 0.2% of the abundance ofradium. the amounts in the earths crust are not harmful. polonium hasbeen found in tobacco smoke from tobacco leaves grown withphosphate fertilizers.because of the small abundance, isolation ofpolonium from natural sources is a very tedious process. the largestbatch was extracted in the first half of the 20th century by processing 37tonnes of residues from radium production. it contained only 40 ci (9 mg)of polonium-210.nowadays, polonium is obtained by irradiating bismuthwith high-energy neutrons or protons
MAIN FORMING COMPOUNDS15
UTILITY16Polonium releases a great deal of energy during its radioactivebreakdown. This has led to the development of compact heat sourcesfor specialized purposes, such as use on space probes.Radiation is used to remove static electricity from photographic film.Static electricity consists of electric charges that collect on the outsideof a surface. In film, they can reduce the clarity of a picture. Theradiation polonium releases creates electrical charges in the airaround it. These charges combine with those on the film, neutralizingthem and preventing damage to the film.
