The Naked People Training Regimen
“The way to really get to know something is to exaggerate it.”
Practice with being the center of attention:
1. Starbucks 30 second order-
a. Order your normal coffee tomorrow morning but instead of giving a 5
second programmed order, extend it to 30 seconds. Maybe you are
contemplating a new drink, maybe you’re curious about the new brew of
coffee, you can decide just make it at least 30 seconds. What if people in
line are in a rush? And what if there are a lot of them staring at me? I
smell the spotlight…I promise they can wait an extra 20 seconds
2. Always leave a voicemail-
a. Caller ID killed the voicemail and spontaneous speaking practice. Bring
3. Give a toast at dinner
a. You don’t have to ring the Champagne flute at the next wedding you
attend (feel free if you’re feeling frisky) but at dinner with friends?
Sunday family time? Say a few words
Practice with discomfort:- everything that comes with making ourselves vulenrable
1. Wear something out of the ordinary
a. You don’t have to dress up like The Joker but add one piece to an outfit
this week that you think will make you look awkward. You don’t have to
raise other’s eyebrows- just your own.
2. Do something out of the ordinary
a. Try something new. Something you wouldn’t normally do. Something
you’re not good at. Argentine tango anyone?
3. Make a ridiculous request
a. I went to lunch by myself and ended up sharing free chips with the
manager of the restaurant. Beat me.
Practice embracing the role of the speaker:
1. Living with pauses
2. Look em in the eye
a. On your way to work this morning. Look three people in the eye. At
some point today, maintain complete eye contact through a
conversation. What emotions came up as you talked? Was it scary being
in direct contact? Were you able to feel in command? Did you look away
when it became too uncomfortable? Take note.
3. Anger management
a. When was the last time you blew up at someone? Make an agreement
with a coworker and practice letting go in front of them.
