• 1.
Dear Friends and Family,
I need your help. I have been given the opportunity of a lifetime to assist the 957,000 Americans who are living with blood cancer.
As many of you know, I have been active in the fight against blood cancers for more than five years. Through my involvement with The Leukemia & Lymphoma society (LLS), I have encouraged awareness about blood cancers and raised funds to support LLS's mission to find a cure for blood cancers and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Each year The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society launches its Man & Woman of the Year fundraising campaign and I have been nominated as a Woman of the Year candidate for the Long Island Chapter. During this campaign from March 1st through May 10th, I have committed to raise at least $20,000, but my team goal is to reach $50,000. All of the money raised will go towards furthering the longstanding mission of LLS.
You may already know about my commitment to furthering LLS's mission. What you might not know is the greater personal meaning behind my commitment to LLS. When I first joined LLS's Hike for Discovery in December 2005, I understood that blood cancers were deadly and serious diseases but it is through my continued dedication to LLS that I have learned of the prolific nature of these diseases. I accepted the challenge of participating in the Women of the Year campaign in honor of my personal friend Michael Dugan who lost his battle against leukemia in March 2009.
At the age of 32, Michael was diagnosed with acute leukemia. Michael was a hardworking corrections officer with a wife and two young children. Just ten months after diagnosis, even after a bone marrow transplant, Michael passed away from the disease. In 2009 I started participating in triathlons in his honor, and this year I have decided to dedicate my Woman of the Year campaign to Michael's memory.
Like many of you, I have witnessed first-hand the debilitating effects leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma can have on those who suffer from these blood diseases and on the friends and family who care for and nurture their loved ones. In fact, leukemia still causes more deaths among children than any other cancer. But, new hope to find a cure has never been greater. Right now is the most important time in the history of blood cancer research as "Smart Drugs", among other advanced therapies, emerge as a new treatment solution. One such drug, Gleevec, was funded by LLS and came onto the market in 2001--it has been called "a kind of blueprint for what's going to happen against other cancers," by Charles Sayer, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute researcher at UCLA.
With your support of a tax-deductible donation, LLS can continue funding critical research in the fight against blood cancers as well as provide outstanding patient services. To donate online you can go to our team's fundraising page, or fill out the attached donation form along with your check made payable to LLS and send them in the self-addressed, stamped envelope that is provided. All donations must be received by May 1st.
I want to thank each and every one of my friends and family for their generous support of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's mission. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is the leading nonprofit organization committed to finding a cure for blood cancers.
For additional information or to make an online donation please go to http://li.mwoy.llsevent.org/Nancy or contact me at 516-238-9501. If you have decided to support my campaign please send your donations no later than May 1st. If you would like to mail in your donation please make the check out to LLS and send it to Nancy Lynch 2 Williams St. East Northport NY 11731 in the self stamped envelope I have provided.
Thank you,
Nancy Lynch &
My Campaign Team
Michaels Angels
