Problem Definition - Overheating and Spatter causing lower tool life and injuries to operator 2. Goals - a) To reduce over heating by finding alternatives to increase heat transfer to cooling fluid i.e water. b) Finding alternatives to reduce spatter in order to improve operator safety. THIRD YEAR SEMINAR: Title : Advanced Cryogenic Machining Of Titanium Description : 1. Problem - a) Titanium has poor thermal conductivity, does not conduct heat efficiently so the temperature rises quickly in the tool. b) It has high tendency to react with many cutting tool materials. c) Manufacturers machine titanium slowly to keep the tool temperature down.Also added machining time adds considerable cost to the end user. 2. Need Of Cryogenic Machining - a) None of the tool materials, however, seem to be effective in machining titanium because of their chemical affinities with it. b) Thus, cryogenic machining has been developed , which is able to both lower the cutting temperature and enhance chemical stability of the workpiece and the tool.
