Time for some guessing: How much does it cost to print a single copy of a Pop. Press Newspaper? How much does it cost to deliver a single copy of a Pop. Press Newspaper (from printers to the shops)? How much does it cost to write, edit and plan the newspaper (staff costs)? What is the circulation of The Sun? How much profit does a Daily Tabloid make (per day)? About 5 – 7p About 1 – 2p About 7 – 8p (per paper) About 3million An average of about £5million a day!
WARNING – the figures quoted on the first slide were not official. DO NOT QUOTE THEM IN THE EXAM! WARNING – the figures quoted on the first slide were not official. DO NOT QUOTE THEM IN THE EXAM! The Objective – to understand HOW a newspaper makes it money (and will this income be safe?).
BRAINSPLURDGE – Using what we’ve learnt so far and a bit of general knowledge, splurdge out a range of ideas as to how Popular Press newspapers manage to make so much money! HOW DO THEY MAKE SO MUCH MONEY?
FIRST – ADVERTISING! Popular Press titles such at The Sun, The Mirror, The Mail and The Express are very efficient ways to advertise. Imagine you are the company for these four items. Which newspaper would you most like to pay money to advertise through AND WHY!
Make Notes: As we have seen previously, Newspapers are targeted at very specific audiences. This is not only because it’s easier to appeal to particular groups BUT ALSO because it is helps them sell advertising space! A company that wants to hit a family audience (like supermarkets or package holiday companies) will clearly prefer to advertise in The Sun over The Mail. (The Sun has a younger readership whilst most Mail readers are older, and less likely to still be living with a full family). The Sun makes a big chunk of it’s profit through the sale of advertising space. HOMEWORK – get hold any newspaper and roughly work out what percentage of it’s pages are adverts!
The Objective – to understand HOW a newspaper makes it money (and how that effects how a newspaper is made)! Since we probably will be writing an essay (or series of paragraphs) on this issue in the exam we might as well practice now! Answer this questions in paragraphs. A PEE model will help!

How important to the Popular Press is advertising? (Suggested evidence – a mention of the costs and income of newspapers).

Can the Popular Press rely on advertising for the bulk of it’s income for ever? (Tip – your evidence might not be a statistic or a quote, but a precise reference to a widely held fact like “sales are dropping” or “the internet is taking a lot of readers and advertisers” will do the trick).

Why have newspapers been such a good place to advertise in the past? (Tip – you’ve had enough help by now….).
