Copenhagen Theatre Circle is proud to present Joe Orton’s black comedy Funeral Games.
When religious conman and cult leader Pringle receives an anonymous letter alleging his
wife Tessa is having an affair with a former Catholic priest, he hires young thug Caulfield to
Although it appears Tessa's visits to the priest McCorquodale involve nothing more
compromising than a blanket bath, Pringle believes it's his right to kill her for committing
adultery. But Pringle is persuaded to tell people Tessa has gone away, in the hope
suspicions will be raised and he will develop a trendy reputation as a killer. But things go
awry when a news reporter begins demanding proof of the murder and accuses Pringle of
being innocent …
Although Funeral Games was first presented by Yorkshire Television back in 1968 and
produced as a stage play in 1970, its humorous take on organized religion and fanaticism –
and how people are drawn into it – is just as relevant today, if not even more so. Joe Orton’s
career lasted only three years until his death in 1967 but was very productive. The adjective
Ortonesque is sometimes used in referring to other similarly scandalous black comedies.
The play features original music, a body part and a sexual reference or two, so you are
invited to join us for a shock and a giggle – go on, we dare you!
There is limited street parking near the venue, although there is underground parking for 130
cars accessible from the corner of Serridslevvej and Gunnar Nu Hansens Plads, beside the
theatre. Be aware, however, that there can be great demand for parking in connection with
events in nearby Fælledparken or the National Stadium (Parken). We would therefore
recommend taking public transport. The nearest S-train station is Nordhavn. The venue can
easily be reached by buses 1A, 14, 40 and 401.
