DOWD, FOUND ON RAILWAY NEARHAIGLER, NEFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASESAN FRANCISCO – The weeklong search for Amtrak passenger and missing person Charles J. Dowd byimmediate family, volunteers and authorities across Colorado and Nebraska, ended with the discovery ofhis body by a BNSF Railway worker in Haigler, NE on Friday, September 21, 2012.Charles J. Dowd, fondly nicknamed, "Dude," had been traveling by Amtrak from Emeryville, CA toChicago, IL with a final destination of Montreal, Canada to visit his son and grandkids. Dowd wentmissing after a scheduled stop in Fort Morgan, CO. The search for Charlie Dowd went viral shortly afterhis family posted a Missing Person’s page on Facebook. Within days, over 3,000 Facebook users “liked”the page and shared messages of help and support on the popular social site. Scores of volunteers showedup in the towns and counties of Western Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa and Illinois along the Amtrak trainroute Charlie had been traveling on to help post flyers, search for Charlie, and help the Dowd family locatetheir father.Born on March 11, 1944, Mr. Dowd was a San Francisco native, a graduate of St. Ignatius High Schooland San Francisco State University. Charlie served as an Army reservist, and a member of the SanFrancisco Fire Department. During his years with SFFD he owned a small tax and accounting business,BMC Tax and Business Services that he still operated at the time of his death.Charlie will be remembered for his crazy sense of humor, goofy storytelling, always calling people byanything but their actual name -he always lovingly referred to Nicole as “Dime,” his love of travel andadventures beginning with camping trips with his family every summer to Lake Wildwood (Penn Valley) tohis numerous trips to Montreal to visit his son and grandkids. He always wanted to go a different route –byplane, train or car. He kept maps of all the different routes he took across the US, Australia and Europeplus one of his crossings on cruises of the Atlantic & Pacific Oceans. He was a huge fan of Taco Bell andespecially loved the one at Linda Mar in Pacifica.He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Patricia Dowd, children Jennifer Dowd of San Francisco, KevinDowd (Jerusha Osborne) grandchildren Anthony and Alexandra Dowd of Montreal, Canada, and brothersJames (Fran), John (Mary), and Philip (Bonnie.) Numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family alsosurvive him.The Dowd family would like to thank the numerous people in the Bay Area and across the country whohave supported them during this challenging time, but especially for the hundreds of concerned citizenswho posted messages of hope and support on Charlie’s Facebook page. funeral mass will be held Saturday, October 6, 2012, at St Phillip’s Church at 12pm, with privateinterment to follow.In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Peninsula Humane Society, 1450 RollinsRoad; Burlingame, CA 94010 September 26, 2012 CONTACT: DOWD (650) 766-6470
