“In the U.K. Pressure Sores absorb around 4% of the National Healthcare expenditure.” (2)
Pressure ulcers, also known as pressure sores, bedsores and decubitus
ulcers, are localized injuries to the skin and/or underlying tissue that
usually occur over a bony prominence as a result of pressure, or pressure
in combination with shear and/or friction. The most common sites are the
skin overlying the sacrum, coccyx, heels or the hips, but other sites such as
the elbows, knees, ankles or the back of the cranium can be affected.(3)
Each year, more than 2.5 million people in the United States develop pressure
In acute care settings in the United States, the incidence of bedsores is
0.4% to 38%; within long-term care it is 2.2% to 23.9%, and in home care, it is 0%
to 17%. Similarly, there is wide variation in prevalence: 10% to 18% in acute care,
2.3% to 28% in long-term care, and 0% to 29% in home care.(4)

Pressure ulcers can trigger other ailments, cause considerable suffering,
and can be expensive to treat. Some complications include autonomic
dysreflexia, bladder distension, bone infection, pyarthroses, sepsis,
amyloidosis, anemia, urethral fistula, gangrene, and very rarely malignant
transformation, Marjolin’s ulcer - Secondary carcinomas in chronic wounds.(5)
DEFINITION OF A PRESSURE ULCER
WHO IS AT RISK
PARTS OF THE BODY AT RISK
PreveDerm Pressure Mapped Gel helps to redistribute pressure to protect critical areas.
It is typically used on bony areas to help prevent skin damage from pressure. The pressure
mapped products with Anti-bacterial technology have been created in the following beneficial
bio-aid shapes: sheets, strips, sacrum and heel padding.
PreveDermSheet (ITEM#606)- Can be used underthe foot or head whilst resting,
between knees or underthe chin. They can also be used for hand contractures, making
them ideal for stroke rehabilitation. The large sheets can be used under the shoulder
whilst lying down.
PreveDerm Strip (ITEM #608) -This shape can be cut of placed as needed to
suit the affected area of skin to prevent ulceration.
PreveDerm Sacrum (ITEM #607) - This shape can be held in place with
incontinence pads or underwear. Common practice includes using as ankle
wrap or around the shoulder, hip or back of the head.
PreveDerm Heel (ITEM#605)- The heel can be used with the long way across
the foot for mobile patients or with the long way across the heel for immobile
patients. It can also be used on elbows and knees.
TEST ULCER PRESSURE RELIEF PAD AS PART OF A CARE PLAN (5)
Pressure Ulcer Pads were used for 3 months in an acute NHS foundation trust as part of a Care Plan
across 2 elderly wards, 1 orthopedics ward and 1 general surgery ward. The product was added to
the care plan that already included repositioning and regular skin inspections. Figures for incidence,
severity and number of pressure ulcers were compared to the 3 months before the Ulcer Pad product
Results - The addition of Ulcer Pads to the care plan contributed to an 87% drop in incidence of
hospital acquired pressure ulcers. The reduction in the overall number of pressure ulcers was 75%
including an eradication of all grade 3 and 4 pressure ulcers.

ABOUT THE PREVEDERM GEL
The PreveDerm polymer gel with Anti-bacterial technologytechnology provides a unique
dermal-delivery system that gradually diffuses USP medical grade mineral oil to impart
deep moisturization for soft and supple skin. Another unique feature of the PreveDerm
gels are the “visco-elastic” properties which allow the gel to move synergistically with
the skin helping to prevent abrasion and discomfort. And of course, all PreveDerm gels
are non-toxic, latex free and hypoallergenic. Unlike silicone and urethanes, PreveDerm
gels have additional functional capabilities, such as the release of additives that provide
antimicrobial, scar reduction, and anti-aging properties, amongst others.
