PHS Direct and
The National Forest
Helping build the Forest for our future
PHS Direct is proud to support The National Forest in its aim of
transforming 200 square miles of central England.
The National Forest is a forest in the making,
and is transforming 200 square miles of central
England – spanning parts of Derbyshire,
Leicestershire and Staffordshire. The eventual
aim is for a third of the area to be covered by
woodland, and to create a mosaic of farmland,
open space, towns and villages, transport
corridors, industrial use, waterways – all
framed by woodland.
Already more than 7.8 million trees have
been planted and woodland cover has been
increased from 6% to 18% since the Forest
was established in the early 1990s. It is already
delivering regeneration to the areas within
the Forest boundary, transforming derelict
coalfields, mineral workings and farmland into
woodlands by planting native broadleaf trees
and practising proper forestry management to
encourage diversity of wildlife.
What is The National Forest?
PHS Direct have developed this venture
as part of our corporate and social
responsibility, and to be able to clearly
demonstrate an ethical approach to our
business model. It was important to us
to find a project which was both relevant
to our business and which engaged our
staff, customers and suppliers alike in a
truly tangible way, and was not just an
exercise in ‘greenwash’. As a national
paper supplier, and with our operations
centre in Dordon, Staffordshire, being
on the doorstep of the Forest, it was a
natural fit for us to be involved in the
development of the project.
PHS Direct’s initial commitment was to plant 5,000 trees per
year for three years, with an option to plant more in the future.
This commitment was made up of a contribution for every box
of paper and low energy hand dryer sold, and was matched by
contributions from our suppliers. This would cover six hectares
of land with trees, at a site at Overseal in Derbyshire, around 12
miles from our offices.
Due to the growth of the business, we have been able to
increase our commitment over the second and third years of our
agreement, with the result that we will be planting over 20,000
trees during the period, covering over 10 hectares (approximately
Our involvement with The National Forest is enhanced by the fact
that 80% of our staff live within 10 miles of the Forest. It is crucial
to us that our staff see the tangible difference that we are making
to their local environment, and to feel pride in that achievement.
We have encouraged them to become directly involved and
engaged with all that the Forest offers, from entering a team in
the inaugural National Forest 10k race, to providing tickets to the
Wood Fair, and culminating in planting days which really bring
home the reality of the contribution we’re all making.
