JACK & JILLContact: Jennifer Newkirk MOCK PRESS RELEASEJenniferN@jack&jill.org212.301.6675 GROWING IT FORWARD: HOW ONE BROOKLYN ORGANIZATION IS FIGHTING NY CHILD OBESITY Jack and Jill, the non-profit afterschool childcare is to add a green initiative to teach food education and basic gardening skills to children ages five to seventeen.March 11, 2010-Brooklyn, NY- Today children not only pass on fruits andvegetables, but also fail to simply identify common vegetables such as tomatoesand cauliflower. Child obesity is rising in most cities in the US and an urban livingenvironment makes it even harder to choose healthier options. But state taxes onsodas and regulations on school lunches are not enough; nutrition educationmust be taught to children at a younger age and supported by parental figures.Jack and Jill is a non-profit organization in Brooklyn providing affordableafterschool care for children to continue learning until picked up by parents.“Grow it Forward” is the name of the new green initiative aimed towardseducating children about healthy and tasty food but also utilizing urban spaces offire escapes, rooftops, backyards, and community gardens to grow food for theentire family.The workshops prepared for the children cover food nutrition education, whereidentifying food groups and making smart choices will be discussed. Otherphysical workshops introduce basic gardening activities to the children in hopesof generating a household activity for the family. Other green activities taughtinclude identifying biodegradable, reusable and recyclable objects for the childrento also share with their family members.
