Before CAD – i.e. computer aided design came into practice, all design and development processes were carried out manually.

Manual design and development meant laborious and time consuming activities and designers were burdened with costly prototyping -testing with lots of trials and errors.
However, CAD expedited design and development soon became the norm, and over the past decades, its use has widened manifold. There are several applications of CAD, and different types of industries use it for different purposes to suit their requirements.
The adoption and usage of CAD capabilities can be seen excessively across several industries and for several applications. These CAD applications in order of their popularity are as follows:
3D modeling has become one of the most sought after CAD application across the AEC and manufacturing industries. It allows accurate reconstruction of buildings, products, manufacturing assemblies etc. Germany is one of the largest users of 3D modeling; the current usage in Germany is 81%, while the usage in other markets is 55%
Product Data Management (PDM):
CAD capabilities are leveraged to track and manage the product related data. This helps improve productivity, enhance collaboration and helps in visual management. Manufacturing industries are major users of PDM as compare to other sectors.
The adoption of advanced simulations using high performance computing is exceedingly seen across the manufacturing and utilities sector. Leveraging CAD capabilities with advanced simulations, allows engineers to craft high performance products, at lower costs. Simulations are used mainly for product design optimization and validation via finite element analysis, CFD analysis and multi body dynamics software tools.
Building Information Modeling:
BIM is an emerging technology; and is already the talk of the town across the AEC industry. Several companies have already adopted BIM while others are anticipating its usage in a few years from now. BIM is all about leveraging and utilizing CAD combined with the power of accurate information.
Product Lifecycle Management (PLM):
PLM has a relatively stable market. CAD capabilities for product lifecycle management are highly used in US. Using PLM drives top line revenue from repeatable processes. Using a PLM application it is possible to design, validate and manage the product and process data thus design for innovation.
It has not gained great popularity due to certain limitations and higher amount of challenges faced by organizations during the initial stages of its implementation.
However, the competitive edge that concurrent engineering provides is highly beneficial in the long term. Big players in the industry have realized this, hence are proactively implementing concurrent engineering as a long term business strategy.
Advanced rendering and visualization:
Companies have eventually started exploring the benefits of CAD for marketing, client proposals and presentations. Besides high level rendering and visualization is also an apt method to convey design details in a highly understandable and a visual manner to all the stakeholders involved.
Outsourcing CAD services is a growing trend seen across industries. Large companies are increasingly taking to outsourcing instead of setting up an in-house CAD department. This is because CAD requirements are niche and outsourcing ensures that niche requirements are handled by experts of that particular segment.
