BRICKPOINT PROPERTIES INC., TO GO SMOKE-FREE IN ALL PROPERTY
BOSTON, Massachusetts (January 23, 2012) - Effective immediately, BrickPoint
Properties Inc., (www.brickpoint.com) today announced it plans to go smoke-free in all
of its apartments and condos and all common areas of the buildings in the Stoneham,
Burlington and Peabody areas by July 1st, 2012. Common areas include the following:
hallways, stairwells, foyers, balconies, entrance steps and walkways and all building
entrances. After July 1st, 2012 BrickPoint Properties Inc., will require residents to smoke
in designated areas at least 200 feet from residential buildings.
“BrickPoint continuously explores ways to improve its properties for our current and
future tenants,” says owner Daniel Maxwell, “and with an increasing amount of data
being reported regarding the negative health affects of smoking and second-hand
smoking, as well as the fire-hazards that complement smoking, it seems only natural for
us to go smoke-free. Because we hold the health, safety and aesthetics of our community
to high standards, this policy will ensure BrickPoint Properties high standards of living
A now common practice throughout Massachusetts, many residential rental properties
have gone smoke-free for both health and safety reasons.
Smoking is considered one of the most preventable causes of disease and death in
Massachusetts and “smoking materials are the leading cause of home and total fire deaths
in the United States,” according to Utah's Department of Health. It is estimated 1,000
children from Massachusetts, who don’t smoke themselves, die each year from being
exposed to second-hand smoke.
Currently, approximately 275 housing authorities nationwide have adopted policies
prohibiting smoke in some or all of their properties. This number is expected to grow in
2012, especially in Massachusetts where all workplaces, restaurants and bars have been
smoke-free since 2004.
With this new policy in place, BrickPoint Properties Inc., hopes to propel itself into a
healthier and cleaner future, while it caters also to current tenants who do smoke.
BrickPoint Properties Inc., understands it is difficult to satisfy all parties, but vows to do
its best to represent all tenants equally and fairly in its decision-making process.
“We don’t want to isolate or exclude anyone--smokers or non-smokers," said Maxwell.
"Simply, we want to create a healthier environment for tenants who find that smoking
apparatuses prohibit them from living healthy and satisfying lives. We always try to find
an equal-ground for all parties involved.”
The new smoke-free policy will not prevent smokers from living in properties owned by
Brickpoint Properties Inc., nor will it evict current tenants who smoke. Instead, the policy
will respect the wishes of non-smokers by separating them permanently from the
smoke—a practice that is widely accepted as the only way to prevent non-smokers from
being negatively affected by the smokes carcinogenic properties.
