National Trade Union movementThe National Trade Union was formedby workers from various crafts suchas shoemakers and carpenters withthe idea of standardizing wages andimproving the working conditionsthroughout each industry.It was formed in 1834 and lasted until1837.The National Trade union gave peoplethe right to declare strike based onworking conditions and wages.
Commonwealth vs. HuntA group known as the BostonJourneymen Bootmakers’ Societydecided to go on strike against anyemployer that used non union labor.They were arrested on conspiracycharges and found guilty until theyappealed to the MassachusettsSupreme Court.Massachusetts Chief Judge LemuelShaw supported the right to strike.This case declared that labor unionsand the right to strike were lawful.This case increased the number ofmembers of labor unions from 5,000 to20,000 members in 1860.
