POLISH NATIONAL DANCES
In our country there are some typical, traditional dances.
Those dances came from various parts of Poland. In our
presentation we would like to show you some of them.
1. Area of Poland: The people dance it all around Poland.
2. How old is it?: It dates back to XVI/XVII century. It’s
one of first Polish dances.
3. Social background: Polonaise was danced by Polish
4. On what occasions was it danced? : It started balls.
5. Costumes: Man wore long gowns, linen trousers with
belts. Woman wore caps with fur, coats, dresses with
shirts and red shoes.
6. Now, the Polonaise is dancing at proms.
He name of the dance comes from Mazowsze, central
region of Poland. It is a nobel dance, which was most
popular in the the nineteenth century and finaly
danced also by middle classes. It is performed in
costumes of noblility. The most distinctive element of
both women's and men's clothes is a noble robe. The
dance was known as early as the 16th century. During
the 17th century it spread all over Poland and began to
appear also in neighboring countries reaching France
and influencing such dances as quadrille.
1. Oberek, also called obertas or ober, is a lively Polish
dance. The name "Oberek" is derived from "obracać
się" which in Polish means "to spin". It consists of many
dance lifts and jumps. It is performed at a much
quicker pace than the Polish waltz and is one of the
national dances of Poland. This is the second-most
popular dance of Polish Immigrants in America.
2. Oberek became popular at the end of the nineteenth
century, although the first mention of " obertasie "
comes from the seventeenth century.
3. The "Polish-American Oberek" is a social dance,
originally brought to America by Polish immigrants in
late 1800s and early 1900s. This social dance derives
from the folk dance oberek; however, the steps are
slightly altered and the music is slightly different.
Obereks are played by Polka bands throughout the
United States. Oberek comes from Mazowsze-central
part of Poland.
4. It is a dance of various social grups.
Kujawiak is a Polish slow folk dance, it comes from
Kujawy, a region in the north of Poland. It dates back to
1830. It was a part of wedding ceremonies.Women wore
colorful dresses. Men had colorful striped pants and vests.
It isn’t danced now.
Krakowiak is a fast, syncopated Polish dance from
Kraków and the south of Poland. It became a
popular ballroom dance in Vienna ("Krakauer") and
At first , the dance was danced only by the rural
people, with time it was danced by all classes.
