Computer Science (the subareas of machine learning and data mining)
B) how you got into this discipline
I started out in the department of Electrical Engineering for my
undergraduate study and got involved in a project on pattern
That project started my interest in the area of artificial
intelligence, particularly the area of machine learning.
C) what are the important elements of this discipline (traditionally)
The areas of machine learning and data mining encompass many different
components that involve statistics, probability and algorithms.
Traditionally, it can be roughly divided into supervised learning
(learn to make prediction), unsupervised learning (automatically
extracting patterns and concepts from data) and reinforcement learning
D) why you are interested in ecosystem informatics; what it means to you
I am most interested in research driven by real-world applications.
Ecosystem informatics provides a great opportunity to collaborate with
scientists from different disciplines and find interesting research
problems within the context of real-world applications.
E) what you would like to accomplish with IGERT students and IGERT
For students outside the CS discipline, I would like them to understand
the basic concepts behind the techniques provided by machine learning
and data mining and know their strengths and limitations and apply them
to real problems. For CS students, I would like them to understand the
challenges that arise when we apply existing techniques in different
application domains and develop suitable approaches to address these
challenges. By means of close collaborations between scientists from
different domains, I envision IGERT projects to not only advance the
research in the scientific application domains but also push the limits
of the current techniques provided by computer science research.
