BATAN R & D FACILITIES
SERPONG NUCLEAR COMPLEX
The Serpong Nuclear Complex is Centres for research & development and engineering of nuclear science
and technology, having been built with the objectives to support development of the nuclear industry and for
preparation, development as well as the operation of Nuclear Power Plants in Indonesia.
The development of installations and laboratories of the Serpong Nuclear Complex had been conducted in 3
phases beginning since 1983 and fully completed in 1992. The area is about 25 hectares and is located in the
Centre for Research of Science and Technology (PUSPIPTEK), Serpong.
The main facility in the area is the GA. Siwabessy Multipurpose Research Reactor with a power of 30 MW,

Installation, Experimental Fuel Element Installation, Radioactive Waste Processing Installation,
Radiometallurgy Installation, Reactor Safety and Engineering Installation, Facility for Development of
Informatics and Computation, Nuclear Mechano Electronic Installation, Neutron Spectrometry Installation, as
well as Storage for Spent Fuel Elements and Contaminated Materials Installation.
BANDUNG NUCLEAR COMPLEX
The Bandung Nuclear Complex was initially constructed in early 1960's on the area of 3 hectares and the
place where the first reactor was built in Indonesia. The activities conducted covers the utilization of the
reactor for research and fostering of expertise, R&D of basic materials, radiosotopes and labelled
compounds, instrumentation and radiometry analysis techniques, supervision of occupational radiation
safety and environment

In addition, nuclear medicine firstly developed in Bandung nuclear complex was the embryo of the nuclear
medicine in Indonesia. The activities of nuclear medicine was then further developed in several hospitals in
In order to support the R&D activities, the Bandung Nuclear Complex utilizes various facilities, among others,
the Triga Mark II Reactor which started with a power of 250 kW in 1965. The power of this reactor was
increased to 1000 kW in 1971 and further to 2000 kW in the year 2000.
Other facilities in this area are the laboratory for physics, chemistry and biology, production of isotopes and
YOGYAKARTA NUCLEAR COMPLEX
The Yogyakarta Nuclear Complex was established in 1974 on a land area of 8.5 hectares. The center for
Technology of Accelerator and Material Process and the Polytechnic Institute of Nuclear Tecnology are
located within this area.
The activities conducted covers R&D in nuclear physics, chemistry, technology of low and medium energy
particle accelerator, process technology, analysis of nuclear materials and reactor, as well as the use of
the reactor for research and fostering of expertise.

In addition, supervision of occupational radiation safety and that of environmental radioactivity are also
conducted. Meanwhile the Polytecnic Institute of Nuclear Technology conducts programmes of education in
the field of nuclear science and technology.
The facilities in this area are the Kartini Research with a power of 100 kW, complemented with a sub-critical
assembly, a laboratory for pure materials research, accelerators, laboratory for nuclear physics and
chemistry, a work safety and health facility, library facilities, as well as laboratory facilities for education.
PASAR JUM'AT NUCLEAR COMPLEX
The Pasar Jum'at Nuclear Complex was built in 1966 in the area of about 20 hectares. Located in this
area are the Center for Application of Isotope and Radiation Technology, Center for Technology of
Radiation Safety and Metrology, Center for Development of Nuclear Geology, Center for Education and
Training and Center for Dissemination of Nuclear Science and Technology.
The facilities in this area, among others are 3 units of Co 60 Gamma Irradiators, 2 electron beam
machines, laboratory for uranium processing, radiation measuring equipment, chemistry, biology, process
and hydrology, education and training facility as well as a permanent exhibition for nuclear science and

EXPLORATION AREA IN WEST KALIMANTAN
This exploration area and test mining were opened in 1975 in Kalan, West Kalimantan. The activities
conducted consist of research in exploration and test mining of nuclear ores, investigation and process
technology of radioactive mineral reserves.
The facilities in this area are an underground test mining tunnel with 618 m deep and a unit for
processing uranium ore into yellow cake.
MONITORING STATION FOR MICRO EARTHQUAKES AND METEOROLOGY JEPARA - CENTRAL
Planning studies for the first Nuclear Power Plant in Indonesia have been undertaken and the result have
shown that the region of the Muria Peninsula can be a suitable location for its site.
Therefore, since 1982 a Monitoring Station for Micro Earthquakes Meteorology has been built and operated
in the Ujung Watu village in Jepara - Central Java. The micro earthquakes monitoring station records the
earthquakes data originating from volcanic as well as tectonic eartquakes, whereas the meteorology station
is applied to record airpressure, wind speed and direction, air temperature, humidity and cosmic radiation

FOOD CROPS VARIETY
By the present time, BATAN research and development using radiation has produced 14 rice varieties.
These varieties were developed using gamma ray radiation mutation technique. These varieties are:
Atomita I (1982), Atomita II (1983), Atomita III (1990), and Atomita IV (1991), Situgintung (1992), Cilosari
(1996), Merauke (2001), Woyla (2001), Kahayan, (2003), Winongo (2003), Diahsuci (2003), Yuwono
(2004), Mayang (2004), Mira 1 (2006)
Varieties are proven to have excellent properties, such as better productivity, disease resistance, shorter
mature time,etc. Farmers in several provinces in Indonesia have already used these varieties.
Total cultivated area of BATAN Rice Varieties is around 400,000 hectares by mid 2006, which is expected
to become 1 million hectares around the end of 2006.
To introduced the latest varieties, BATAN conducts dissemination activities known as IPTEKDA (Iptek
Untuk Daerah or Science and Technology for Local Development).

The Purpose of IPTEKDA Programme:
2. ANIMAL HUSBANDRY
The aims of R&D activities using nuclear technique for animal husbandry are to invent food supplement
formula, to improve ruminant animals (cow, buffalo, goat and sheep) production. The research utilizes
isotopes and radiation technology and Nitrogen (N), Phosphor (P), Carbon (C) and Sulphur (S) are some
isotopes used in the activities.
Class food supplement product namely UMMB (Urea Multinutrient Molasses Block) and HQFS (High
Quality Food Supplement). These products are made of agricultural industry.
The food supplements (UMMB and HQFS) are introduced to Indonesian people through IPTEKDA
programme. The programme consists of dissemination and partnership activities, technology utilization and
technology transfer. At the present time, many farmers in at least 23 provinces have utilized this food
In addition, the nuclear technique (RIA) has also been used for the early detection of animal pregnancy
Centre for Application of Isotopes and Radiation Technology – BATAN has been accredited by National
Committee for Accreditation of R & D Organization with the classification in the field of Environment
Agriculture, Veterinary and Crop Sciences, since December 2004.
Radiation Induced Mutation Breeding of Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor)
Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) is a cereal plant having potential to be cultivated and developed in Indonesia,
especially in drought areas. Sorghum has a wide agroecological adaption, drought tolerance, high
production, low input crop and more resistant to pest and disease than the other food crops. Sorghum has
high nutritive value so that it is very good to be used as alternative food and animals feed. Sorghum has long
been known by the Indonesia farmers especially in the regions of Java, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) and
East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). In Java, Sorghum is known with the name Cantel, and farmers usually include it
in a multiple cropping system.
3. FOOD IRRADIATION APPLICATION
BATAN carried out R&D on irradiation food using gamma irradiation dealing with technology of food
preservation. Till to date, some food commodities have been approved to be commercialized based on the
decree of Minister of Health No. 152/MENKES/SK/11/1995
BATAN JATROPHA PLANT RESEARCH
Radiation Induced Mutation Breeding of Jarak Pagar (Jatropha curcas L)
In Indonesia (Java island), people know Jatropha curcas as Jarak Pagar, which grows as a fence along the
side of road as a border perimeter plant. BATAN has also carried out mutation breeding on Jatropha curcas,
due to energy crisis in Indonesia.
The oil content of Jatropha curcas seed ranges from 35-38% by weight, and those of the kernel range
from 40-60%. A number of research have shown that Jatropha bio diesel has fuel properties and provide
very similar engine performance to that of diesel fuel.
Renograph is used to diagnose kidney functions using radioisotopes as a tracer. This equipment is
currently used in several hospitals.
Thyroid Uptake Counter is utilized to study the performance of thyroid gland on accumulating and

BATAN tissue bank research has been established to provide high quality tissue grafts for transplantations
purposes. This product has been generally used to help the hospital patients and the victims of tsunami
disaster and volcano eruption.

TRIGA MARK II REACTOR BANDUNG
TRIGA MARK II Reactor was built in 1964 with a power of 250 kW. The reactor power was increased to
1 MW in 1971. In the year 2000, BATAN scientists and technicians upgraded the reactor to a 2 MW.
The reactor is utilized for radioisotope production and labeled compound production activities, human
resources training facility, instrumentation and radiometric technique research facility, material science
research, radiation safety research and nuclear medicine service
KARTINI REACTOR YOGYAKARTA
KARTINI Reactor was built with a power of 100 kW in 1979. The reactor is utilized as a reactor operator
training facility and material research facility.
G.A. SIWABESSY MULTI PURPOSE REACTOR SERPONG – BANTEN
G. A. SIWABESSY Multi Purpose Reactor was firstly utilized in 1987 with a power of 30 MW. This high
flux multipurpose research reactor is equipped with various facilities for neutron irradiation and
spectrometers, post irradiation examination laboratory, engineering and safety laboratory. The reactor is
supported by nuclear fuel element, a low energy cyclotron, radioisotope and radiopharmaceuticals
production, a radioactive waste management technology as well as material science research and
Government of Indonesia under Indonesian Green Energy Action Plan (IGEAP) have a plan to develop
several new and renewable energy sources, which environmental friendly as oil substitution in order to
reduce the oil consumption.
Utilizing Nuclear Science and Technology, BATAN conducts research and development in energy field to
provide new and renewable energy sources which symbiotic and synergistic with other energy sources,
either fossil or other renewable energy to fulfill national energy needs.
One of research and development in connection with IGEAP is mutation breeding of Jarak Pagar
(Jatropha curcas L) and Shorghum (Sorghum bicolor). Jatropha plant can produce Jatropha oil which can
be used as fuel alternative for diesel engines (biodiesel). This non toxic, degradable and renewable fuel
can reduce serious air pollutants such as particulates, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon.
Unlike other fuel, Jatropha oil is agriculturally oriented. Itis important to use mutation breeding for the
improvement of Jatropha as a fuel crop, in term of its early maturity, yield and oil content in the seeds.
In similar with Jatropha plant. Sorghum bicolor also potential to produce bioethanol. BATAN also conducts
research and development utilizing mutation technique to improve Shorgum plant characteristics.

Water Resources Management
Underground Water Exploitation
Project Area : Gunung Kidul - Yogyakarta
Programmes and activities :
To obtain data and information required for optimal exploitations of underground streams in the Gunung

Nuclear Technique for ultimate Ground Water Exploitation
Radioisotopes tracer technique is utilized to identify the underground water pattern, water flow rates and
The underground water flow pattern is made based on these measurements result which shows the
underground water pattern and quality.
The measurement data will be processed and utilized to manage the exploration plan. The water produced
will then be useful to provide fresh water for the people needs in Gunung Kidul Area - Yogyakarta. Other
technique by using radiometry measurement mapping was used to obtain water resources in Tangkil -
Klaten, Central Java.
Nuclear Technique Application in Geothermal Electricity Power Plant
Nuclear technique especially radioisotope technique is utilized to find water resources, measure heat
reservoir temperature and to find recharge area.
This technique is already implemented in Kamojang (West Java), Lahendong (North Sulawesi), Sibayak
(North Sumatera) and Dieng (Central Java) Geothermal Electricity Power plant.
International and National Cooperation
The working and program cooperation has been arranged between BATAN and national institutions,
including local government, universities, departments, companies, research centers, etc.
The International cooperation has been done between BATAN and other countries, as well as international
institutions, such as IAEA, KAERI, Westinghouse, etc. The cooperation was arranged for the purpose of
knowledge transfer of nuclear technology and expertise and to improve competency, skill, and quality of
human resource of BATAN.
This cooperation will optimized the utilization all potential researches, and motivate the creation of new
business opportunities, for small scale, middle, and also accelerate innovation among society.
