Unitarian Universalist Church of Sarasota presents Climate Change Symposium
Environmental experts to address current environmental situation, discuss conservation strategies
SARASOTA, FL – The Unitarian Universalist Church of Sarasota, with the support of Presenting Sponsor BDH Associates, LLC, is proud to present a climate change symposium titled, “Fire, Floods and Famine: What Can We Do About Climate Change?” The event, which takes place at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Sarasota (3975 Fruitville Road, Sarasota) on Wednesday, February 11, from 4:30-8:30pm, will include a catered dinner by Morton’s Gourmet Market (soft drinks and wine will be included).
Guests will learn about how climate change is directly impacting Southwest Florida from experts in the field. Featured panelists at the event will be David Hastings, a professor of Marine Science and Chemistry at Eckerd College; Eric Draper, the executive director of Audubon Florida; and Linda Marsa, a speaker, journalist and author of “FEVERED: Why a Hotter Planet will Hurt Our Health and How We Can Save Ourselves.”
Topics to be addressed include:
Sounding the alarm: The earth will survive – will we?
Making the most of the next 10 years: Smart conservation strategies for a sustainable future.
Impact in the Sunshine State: The status of Florida’s oceans, birds and wildlife.
A realistic view of where we are and where we need to be.
Panelist Linda Marsa says the negative impact of climate change on humans cannot be overstated. “Most Americans don’t understand what the harsh reality of what life on a hotter planet will be like,” she said. “In the absence of meaningful mitigation and adaptation strategies, we’ll live sicker and die quicker on a hotter planet.”
Tickets are $25; a portion of the proceeds will be donated to a local environmental group. Call (941) 371-4974 or go to climatechange.uusarasota.org to register.
