National HIV Testing Day, implemented by the National Association of People with AIDS, is scheduled for June 27. This year will be the 17th annual campaign to encourage people of all ages to "Take the Test, Take Control". All sexually active young adults, especially those who have yet to be tested, are urged to participate in the movement. This is just one event out of multiple campaigns supported by AIDS.gov, the government funded website that has a goal of increasing HIV testing, including movements based on nationality, sexuality, and gender. Echo Boomers are no strangers to STD testing campaigns. Television networks targeted towards the young generation have their own programs like MTVs GYT, standing for Get Yourself Testing, and BETs Rap-It-Up. Other organizations like Planned Parenthood also encourage safe sex and knowing your status, as to protect your sex partners from receiving a sexually transmitted disease you may have been unaware of. Testing centers are available throughout Long Beach and in surrounding cities. The Center for Disease Control has a service called the National HIV and STD Testing Resources, which allows you to insert your zip code and find STD and HIV testing facilities near you. Clinics, centers, and hospitals will be offering free testing on National HIV Testing Day, which should get more young adults interested in learning their results who were possibly deterred from the cost of a test and lack of health insurance. The City of Long Beach has a HIV Epidemiology Program, in which they have gathered data regarding Long Beach HIV/AIDS cases. As of December 31, 2010, the city had over 1,300 cases of HIV with a 3% mortality rate. 87% of those cases were among males, with the majority of cases among Caucasians and from male to male contact. AIDS statistics were even worse in Long Beach, with over 6,000 cases and a 48% mortality rate. The majority were still among males, Caucasians, and male to male contact. This is not a big surprise, as Long Beach has a large gay & lesbian population. Although there are no National HIV Testing Day events in Long Beach, there are several in Los Angeles that will provide rapid on-site testing, where participants will be able to know their status in 20 minutes, as well as plenty of information and resources on the condition. Its important to know if youre HIV positive not only for yourself, but for your partner as well. Take time on June 27 to get tested.
