The senate meeting of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS)
held today in the capital city has given the go-ahead to NAMS to expand its
academic programs to various hospitals in the country.
NAMS had asked the Ministry of Health and Population to grant it
permission to run Doctor of Medicine (MD)/Master of Surgery (MS)
programs in various hospitals throughout the country from the next
In the first phase, NAMS will run the programs in Western Regional
Hospital, Koshi Zonal Hospital and Bharatupr Hospital.
Dr. Ganesh Gurung, Vice Chancellor of NAMS said, “Only 10 per cent
doctors have been able to complete post graduate study in the country till
date. On top of that, many of them go abroad. If we can expand MD/MS in
the central, regional, sub-regional and zonal hospitals, we will be able to
produce more experts. It will not only help the institution but also enable us
to produce specialists who will provide services in various corners of the
country.” He further added, “Minister for Health and Population Khaga Raj
Adhikari has been very positive about the decision of the senate of NAMS.
It will also help implement the government’s National Health Policy in a
more effective manner.”
The senate meeting has further decided to hold the convocation of NAMS
