3 sizes of poodles - theStandard Poodle, theMiniature Poodle and theToy Poodle. The Standardis the largest and standsover 15 inches at the topof the shoulders. TheMiniature is the middlesize and is 10 inches at thetop of the shoulders. ToyPoodles are under 10inches and weigh 6 to 8pounds
One of the more usefulpoodle facts is thatPoodles are great pets forpeople with allergiesbecause they do not shedand are hypoallergenic. Inaddition, poodles neverhave a doggy odor.
Poodles are one of theoldest breeds andcarvings of dogs thatresemble Poodles can befound on Greek andRoman coins. The breedwas recognized by theAKC in 1890 and by the1960’s, they were themost popular breed inAmerica.
The Pet poodle has beenpopular in Russia, France andGermany since the 1500’s andare even the national dog ofFrance. In Germany, theywere used for hunting and aregreat water retrievers, in factthe name Poodle comes fromthe German Pudel which isshort for Pudelhund meaning“splashing dog“. Of the 3different sizes, the standardpoodle is the oldest.
The Poodles interestingtype of hair, which canrange from course andwooly to soft and way,lends it to a variety ofdifferent cuts or clips. Weare all familiar with thePoodle show clip, butthere is also a puppy clip,continental clip, Englishsaddle clip and pet clip.Poodles hair can also becorded like a Komondor.
Poodles are people orientedand eager to please as well assmart, lively and active. Theymake great watch dogs as wellas hunting dogs. However,you need to keep your poodleamused because their highintelligence can cause them tobe bored easily. The Poodlelearns tricks quickly and is oneof the easiest dogs to housetrain.
One of the mostimpressive Poodle facts istheir lifespan - especiallyfor the toy poodle thatcan live to be 17 years oldif the dog is notoverweight and leads ahealthy lifestyle. TheMiniature Poodlestypically live to about 14years of age and theStandard Poodle about 11and ½ years.
