The Importance of Installing a Pool Fence
If you have a swimming pool, you may be unsure about whether or not to install a fence around
it. The answer is simple: if you want to protect your loved ones and your pool, it is critical to
install a pool fence.
It only takes a moment for a child to fall into a swimming pool and drown. According to the U.S.
Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), over 2,000 children under the age of five are
hospitalized or die from pool-related incidents each year. But having a fence around the water
could have prevented almost 70 percent of these accidents, experts say. One such expert group,
the American Academy of Pediatrics, recommends that all swimming pools be fenced in order to
prevent these tragedies.
Young children can be unpredictable and fast, and most do not realize that water is dangerous.
Older children may overestimate their swimming abilities and also meet harm by being in the
pool unattended. Instead of having to worry constantly that your child will sprint to the poolside
and fall in, it is much simpler to install a pool fence to block the child from reaching the water.
If you do not have children of your own, installing a pool fence is still very important. When
friends, family members, or neighbors come to visit, the barrier will make everyone feel more
comfortable and it will keep the children safe. Pets are also likely to end up in the water if they
have easy access to it. Although animals are sometimes better swimmers than children, certain
animals may panic. Pets can also make a mess of the pool by dragging debris into the water or
using the pool as a bathroom. In order to keep animals safe and the pool well maintained, fences
can be reinforced with mesh to keep animals from squeezing between bars.
Pools without fences are easy targets for strangers or neighbors who may sneak over and swim
when you are on vacation, or even during the day when you are at work. Installing a gate with a
secure lock can prevent unwanted visitors from treating your background as a public swimming
spot. Overall, pool fences are essential investments for any pool owner.
