The cast-iron bridge solution proposed byTelford was chosen and construction work beganunder his supervision.Pontcysyllte aqueduct was opened on 25 November1805.
The PontcysyllteAqueduct madeThomas Telfordfamous. He wasrecognized in hislifetime as thegreatest builder ofiron bridges andcanals of his time.
During the 19th century the canal andits engineering structures wereregularly maintained. No structuralchanges were made.
The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct was completelyrenovated in 2003-2004.
The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is 1000 feet long and 125feet high.
