BEST PRACTICE ALERT
Title: PREVENTING FALLS FROM FLAT BED VEHICLES
The above photos demonstrate good practice implemented by William
Hares LLC at the MASDAR Green City Project in Abu Dhabi at the Mist 1A
site carried out by Principal Contractor Al Ahmadiah - Hip Hing JV. This
is a home made safety handrail system for the prevention of falls from flat
bed vehicles while banksmen prepare loads for slinging. The system
breaks down for ease of transportation, it is lifted into position, the
vehicle drives through the handrail system and stops with its wheels on
the base plates to secure it, it is also tied back to the vehicle flat bed
section for more stability as seen in these photos. At present, access is
via a ladder secured to the rear of the vehicle.
Note: Prior to this system being brought to site we had 2 incidents
regarding personnel falling / jumping off the side of flat beds one
sustained a broken ankle & the other a bad sprain both resulting in an LTI.
